Recent research shows California was one of just five states that experienced a population decline last year, with about 9,465 fewer residents—a 0.02% dip from 2024 to 2025. While overall U.S. growth slowed to under 1%, Vermont saw the largest decrease in residents. California’s demographics continue to shift, with a median age of 39, 5.21% of the population under 5, and 17.5% over 65. As a broker who’s spent decades guiding clients across San Clemente, Dana Point, Newport Beach, and coastal Orange County, I pay close attention to these trends.
